About Patents (Based on Canadian Laws) - Product Development Connection
Question: I have an idea for an invention. Can I get a patent?
Answer: According to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, "there are three basic criteria for patentability:
The invention must show
novelty (first in the world).
It must show utility (be
functional and operative).
It must show inventive ingenuity and not be obvious to someone skilled in that area."1
Additionally, "you cannot patent a scientific principle, an abstract theorem, an idea, some methods of doing business, or a computer program per se. "1
